Michelle Scott
My work is primarily oversized watercolor, inspired by the natural world, bordering somewhere between realism and the abstract. Painting large allows me to be more expressive with color and texture. I lay in stains, free-flowing washes, and explosive blooms, often letting the watercolor take on a life of its own.
My subject matter is rooted in our connection to nature, especially rocks, which I return to again and again for their quiet strength and subtle variation. I’m also drawn to plant life, flowers, and animals of both land and sea. Every so often, a hidden word, a bit of humor, or a memory finds its way into the work. These elements keep the process personal and playful while still creating something others can connect with.
Occasionally, I work on a smaller, more intimate scale, delicately guiding the watercolor to remain loose, expressive, and full of energy.
