In this project, students at Truckee Meadows Community College created a pair of expressive charcoal drawings exploring the full range of value, light, and space. One drawing emphasizes a high-key (light on light) composition, while the other explores low-key (dark or chiaroscuro) effects. Students developed original concepts through research, thumbnail sketches, and written reflection, considering how subject matter, identity, texture, line, shape, and value work together to support meaning. Mounted on honeycomb panels, each drawing demonstrates an intentional use of positive and negative space, compositional structure, and mood, resulting in a visually and conceptually unified series.
