This calligraphy shape poem in ink and watercolor is inspired by a song first written by John Lennon titled, "I'm Only Sleeping." In it, he tells of wanting to relax and dream rather than join the world rushing by outside his window. I often have this feeling myself, waking early in the morning, closing my eyes and returning to a lovely dream.
The watercolors of orange and yellow are meant to have a morning glow. The blue under the bed is inviting a little more sleep, while the lettering of the shape poem tells of what is going on with the person lying there.
I only recently learned to do shape calligrams, so this work is a fun way for me to practice this art and share the words of one of my favorite songs.
