I have always been fascinated with insects, especially very colorful ones. Among the more vibrant are those with iridescent, metallic-like color. Although there are many examples to select from, for this project I chose to showcase two – the Blue Emperor Butterfly and the Beyer’s Scarab. Although very different species, they both display beautiful, almost otherworldly coloring. The theories for purpose of iridescent colors in insects ranges from camouflage, attracting mates or warding off predators. While these reasons may be accurate, I like to think that God created these jewel-like creatures to delight our eyes. They certainly bring me a lot of delight.
