Project Inspiration:

“We speak, we listen, we sonder, we move. Our knowledge is good.

We’ve understood what it is for.

We hear and we’ve seen what is great and small,

under the sky and on the earth” – Popul Vuh, circa 600 BC.

One April 8, 2025, all students collaborated during imaginative Environmental Liberation Education experiences connected to the Honeycomb Project. Environmental Liberation Education integrates academics into mindfulness, cultures, and sustainability with hands-on circle activities and big picture questions, indoors with nature or outdoors. Environmental Liberation Education is to think global and act local, uplifting Social Emotional Learning (SEL) with real-world healing.

During the April 17th Earth Day event at TMCC, I left my Earth Day EDU Table to do an art method I had never tried before - Gelli prints! I loved how several TMCC students taught me how to do it. They were so patient and encouraging. Then, when I had to get back to my EDU Table, another professional artist that Candace had invited to the station, integrated more layers onto my print. Also, to my delight, a preschooler added to my print! So this was intergenerational interconnectedness! I love collaborative art because I am able to process my own inner anxieties - self-doubt as an artist and fears about the world - with love and co-creation. Humans are social beings and I believe that the best art is social and reciprocal not only between artist and audience, but also between artists and audiences cultivating multicultural integration in real time. -Micaela Rubalcava
